Volunteer Beacon of Light: Maddie Shullman

“The smile on the homeowner’s face makes every drop of sweat worth it.”

Maddie, September Volunteer of the Month Meet Maddie, one of our amazing volunteers at Habitat for Humanity South Palm Beach County. We had the opportunity to chat with Maddie about why she volunteers for Habitat and want to share some of the highlights of our interview.

Why do you like volunteering for Habitat?
I love volunteering for Habitat because it is so rewarding. The hard labor is tiring, but the feeling of accomplishment once you’ve transformed a home and see the smile on the homeowner’s face makes every drop of sweat worth it.

What’s your favorite memory volunteering with Habitat?
I have so many favorite memories with Habitat. One that particularly stands out is when we revitalized the community church. It brought such a smile to my face to see the community come together for something that meant so much to this neighborhood. It was even more special because a handful of the churchgoers were homeowners I had previously met through other neighborhood revitalization projects, and some I had even worked on their homes.

It is so heartwarming to work alongside the homeowners and continue building these relationships. I really enjoy getting to know the community and seeing it transform week after week and project after project.

“Volunteering at Habitat has been one of the best decisions I’ve made.”

What would you say to someone who may want to volunteer with Habitat but isn’t sure if they should take the leap?
Do it! I was apprehensive at first, but volunteering at Habitat has been one of the best decisions I’ve made. Everyone is so friendly and so welcoming that I felt like I fit in from the very first day. It’s one big family.

You will be surrounded by like-minded individuals who want to give back to their communities. And I’ve picked up some valuable life skills while improving the lives of others. It’s a win-win!

“I have built lasting friendships”

Is there anything else you want to say?
Through Habitat I have built lasting friendships that have impacted my life in so many positive ways. The Habitat staff are the most selfless and supportive individuals you will meet. The volunteers that come together to improve the lives of others are hardworking and friendly. And the community you are working in is filled with the most down to earth people, who are grateful for all you do.
